Understanding what it means to have dementia: An introduction

Posted in : All, Living with dementia on by : Giulia Melchiorre

Everyone’s experience of dementia is different and we can by no means expect to fully understand how someone with dementia is feeling, what they are thinking or what they are experiencing. But what we can do is to try and understand better what dementia does to our brains (and bodies), how these effects translate into affecting day-to-day life, and how we can best deal with these changes. This is important, because dementia can affect all aspects of someone’s life, and there is far more to it than just memory changes.

The aim of this new blog series on “Understanding the effects of dementia” is to help you understand the science of dementia, and understand what it means for the people affected by it. We have tried to explore the most common questions people have regarding dementia, and as part of this series we are going to explore among others changes in self-awareness, emotional status, communication abilities, behaviour, relationships, memory, physical abilities, eating and swallowing, and sleep.

If there are any questions you would like to have answered, comment below or send us a message and we would be happy to incorporate these in our blog series.
